During a famine in the Republic of China era, orphan Summer Rivers and her Grandpa are driven into a cowshed by her Second Uncle and Second Aunt. She discovers their old house's root cellar connects to a modern city, gaining the ability to see a golden light. With help from the modern world, Summer obtains supplies and trades Republican-era copper coins for wealth. She forges a path to survival, connecting the two worlds.
