Yara Crestwood, the princess of the fallen Empire of Wei, accidentally saves a gravely injured White Fox on the day of a blood sacrifice. After her kingdom is destroyed and her family is lost, she endures humiliation to survive in a prisoner-of-war camp, only to give birth to three snow-white fox cubs, who are deemed abominations. In her moment of desperation, Jude Sterling, the Regent of the enemy nation, appears to protect her—he is revealed to be the White Fox from all those years ago, and also the father of her cubs. In a chaotic world, the two join forces to raise their cubs, outsmart treacherous officials, and pacify the Southern Reaches. Ultimately, the fox cubs grow into their human forms, and the family of five rules the vast empire together, ushering in an era of prosperity and auspicious peace.
